Sources close to the White House have said President Bush has chosen White House counsel Alberto Gonzales to replace retiring AG John Ashcroft. Gonzales, one of the most prominent Hispanics in the administration, is a longtime friend and ally of George W. Bush. He has served with Bush for at least a decade, as general counsel when Bush was governor of Texas, and then as secretary of state and as a justice on the Texas Supreme Court. Gonzales was also rumored to be appointed to the Supreme Court.
